Last Links of London

They are just the latest (links of london) items to use the subways as a designer logo. The museum increased its sales of clothing, books and knickknacks to $1.5 million last year, from $398,000 in 1998.

''We're trying to create a cachet: Taking the subway is the coolest thing you can do,'' said Gabrielle Shubert, the museum director. ''We think we've achieved that with our products. We have great apparel, really cool T-shirts that hip-hoppers and politicians are wearing.''

Sales of subway-inspired stuff now account for more than one-third of the $4 million annual budget at the museum, helping to make it nearly self-sufficient. (The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Links of London Bangle which oversees the museum, still gives it a small operating subsidy, along with rent-free space and administrative help.)

The best sellers are inexpensive token jewelry, subway line T-shirts and map-covered products, including stationery, umbrellas and shower curtains.

But the museum's role model, the London Underground, suggests that there is more selling to be done. ''London does an amazing job,'' Ms. Shubert said.

The Underground sells more than $:2 million, or $3.7 million, of merchandise and licensed products each year. In June, Transport for London, the city's transport agency, unveiled its first-ever full fashion line in Florence, Italy. Last month, it began selling household items, even furniture, with the Tube's well-known circle-and-bar logo.

''We've probably got the most famous branding of any transport organization in the world, links of london Heart Charm '' said David Ellis, the agency's head of intellectual property development. Underground-inspired apparel is now sold in France, Germany, Italy and Spain and will be available in the Middle East, India and Japan later this year.
